Why Were Two Children Buried With Over 10,000 Beads?

Two disabled boys were buried under 10,000 ivory beads 34,000 years ago. What ancient graves can, and cannot, tell us about how people treated the dead.

In Russia there is a grave with two boys in it, aged about 10 and 12. They were buried head to head 34,000 years ago.

With them were more than 10,000 beads carved from mammoth ivory. Experiments suggest each bead took close to an hour. There were 300 pierced fox teeth and 16 ivory spears. One spear is a mammoth tusk that has been straightened. Nobody knows how.

Both boys were disabled. Nearby, a strong man of about 40 was buried with around 3,000 beads. The children got more than three times as many. Whatever was being measured, it was not usefulness.

The pit of bones

In a cave system in northern Spain there is a deep shaft with a chamber at the bottom. At least 28 people are down there: men, women and children. They are about 430,000 years old, long before our species existed.

They did not simply fall. They are not in one heap, and there are almost no animal bones with them. If it were a trap, animals would be there too. The most likely answer is that other people put them there.

One more thing was in the pit: a single hand axe of red quartzite, unlike any other tool at the site. It was never used. The team named it Excalibur.

One object is one object. It could have been dropped. But it is the oldest hint we have that death was handled.

The flower burial that was not

In the 1960s, at Shanidar cave in northern Iraq, a Neanderthal man was found with clumps of flower pollen around him. The story of the flower burial went around the world and changed how people saw Neanderthals.

Then other researchers checked the pollen. Flower pollen does not normally sit in tight clumps. A kind of bee digs burrows in cave floors and packs pollen into them in exactly that way. Most people who study the site now think the flowers were stored by an insect.

What survived the checking is still remarkable. Several bodies were placed in the same spot over a long time, and new work found another. People were returning to one place with their dead.

A claim that did not pass review

In 2023 a team working in a very deep cave in South Africa said that a small-brained human relative had dug graves 250,000 years ago.

Reviewers said no evidence of digging had been shown. A grave leaves a cut shape in the soil. Others offered simpler explanations: a natural death trap, water moving bones, animals moving bones.

It is not settled. The team still says they are right and work continues. Right now, the claim is not accepted.

What is not in doubt

From about 100,000 years ago there are bodies placed on purpose in hollows that were clearly dug, curled up, with objects beside them and covered in red ochre. Ochre is iron-rich earth. It takes effort to find and grind, and people used it on the dead all over the world.

You cannot dig up what somebody felt. Grief does not fossilise, and neither does belief. But you can measure work. Ten thousand beads is thousands of hours that could have gone into food or shelter.

Sleeping above the dead

In Turkey there is a town 9,000 years old where the houses are packed so tightly that people walked across the roofs. Inside each house is a raised sleeping platform, and under it are the dead. Sometimes more than 30 in one house, added over generations.

In the same region, people dug skulls back up, rebuilt the faces in plaster, pressed shells into the eye sockets and kept them in the house. Some show wear from being handled often.

The hardest case

In a cave in England, human bones from 14,000 years ago carry cut marks. Three skulls, one from a child of about three, were cleaned and shaped into bowls, with the edges chipped straight.

It is easy to call that savage. But nobody spends hours shaping a bowl from somebody they hated. There is no sign these were enemies. We cannot say what it meant. We can only say that somebody did it slowly and neatly.

The short answer

Two famous stories are in serious doubt. What survives is quieter and stronger. We cannot know what any of these people believed. Belief does not survive. Effort does, and the effort is enormous, everywhere, for a very long time.
